World of Work Week

This week the Enterprisers held their World of Work Week. This was organised by Ms Cox and Ms Myrtil.

As part of our World of Work Week, all classes received either a visitor or a trip to a place of work to learn about what skills people needed for certain jobs. The professions the children learnt about included a nurse, a carpenter, an agent and an MP.

The Year 6 class had a visit from the Andrew Slaughter MP. Andy Slaughter is the Labour MP for Hammersmith and Shadow Justice Minister. He explained to the children how parliament works and what you need to do to become an MP.

The Junior Road Safety Officers have been hard at work fining parents who park or stop illegally or in a dangerous position. They have reported this week that they had very few people to fine, which is very good news.

They have also written to our 3 councillors requesting that they look in to the safety of the children who are walking or riding into the school.

Christmas Concerts & DVDs

Congratulations to all those children who took part in the Nursery, KS1 and KS2 Christmas Concerts. Each performance was a great success and there were full houses for all the shows. Many parents have commented on these being our best shows yet.

Due to the great demand for seats and the sad news that some families did not get tickets for some of the shows, we are in the process of changing the format so that this will not happen again next year.

DVDs.
All three shows were professionally filmed (the morning performances of the KS1 and KS2 shows) and all three will be put on to one DVD which you will be able to order in January 2012. A form will go home in the new year which will need to be completed and returned with the money to the class teacher. Each DVD costs £5.

We are very proud of our latest Year 6 SATs results. Melcombe has been building from strength to strength and each year we achieve higher results than the previous year!

85% of children achieved Level 4 or above in both English and Mathematics
32% in achieved above Level 5 in both
91% of pupils made the expected progress in English

Father Christmas at Melcombe

It was a happy day at Melcombe Primary today as Father Christmas arrived early with a large number of presents for some lucky children.

The school would like to thank CAA who paid for Father Christmas to leave the North Pole and travel to London early.

The Melcombe Football team took on St John's Primary School on Friday and won 1 - 0. Congratulations to all the players and especially to Owen in Yr 6 who scored the only goal.

Melcombe Stilt Football Victory

Chess Team are Stars!

Children's Names, Photos & Work on the Website

The school has a very comprehensive website and prides itself on the fact that this is kept current and is extremely informative. In order to do this, the school often needs to:
• Name children on the school’s website
• Put children’s work on the school’s website
• Place photographs of children on the school’s website
• Upload videos of children onto the school’s website

The school has the following policy, which is in line with the current government policy:
Names of children, children’s work, children’s photographs and videos will be uploaded onto the school’s website separately. Under no circumstances will these be used in any combination e.g. a child’s image (photograph or video) may not be linked with that child’s name.

From time to time the school also receives requests from groups with which we work e.g. BBC, Disney, Espresso, to allow them to use the same information (names, work, photographs and videos) as part of their work. The school insists these groups adhere to our and the government’s policy when using this information. In these cases parents and carers will be asked to sign an additional consent form from these groups giving them permission to use this information.

However, the school appreciates that there may be some parents or carers who may for some reason do not wish to have their child’s name, work, photograph or video placed on the school’s website for extremely valid reasons. If this is the case, you need to state this in writing for the school’s records and address the letter to Mr Leeming within the next week. Please give the letter directly to Mr Leeming. The school will presume you have no objections if we have not received any letter by Friday the 16 December 2011.

Ugandan Links

The International Ambassadors were invited to a meeting at the William Morris Academy to hear about the work they do with a group of Ugandan schools. Othman and Cerise went along with Mr Leeming to the meeting and listened to a number of children from William Morris describe their experiences in Uganda and how it had changed their lives being there.

The International Ambassadors came up with a few ways in which we could join up with William Morris and work with some Ugandan Primary Schools. We will be meeting with the William Morris pupils who will give us some of their ideas.

We are a Fairtrade School

Melcombe Primary School is the first school in our borough to be awarded Fairtrade Staus and we are still the only school to have achieved this. The Fairtrade committee has decided that we will be making links with our neighbouring schools to encourage them to become Fairtrade too.

Sponsoring a Child

The International Ambassadors are supporting a child in South Africa. His name is Zacharia and he lives in Kodumela, a small village in the northern Province of Limpopo. The communities here struggle to feed their families on the little food that they are able to grow on their small plots of land. Poor harvests mean that many children and their families are forced to go hungry. The International Ambassadors and the Enterprisers are working together to support Zacharia. We sponsor him through World Vision and there will be many opportunities for you to help us support him this year.

Fines for Illegal Parking

The Junior Road Safety Officers would like more children to walk, scooter or cycle to school. They would like less children to come to school by car. They have also identified that the traffic outside the school gates, both before school and after school, is very dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists. Many parents still stop on the zig zag lines either to quickly drop their children off or some even park there even though we have put a banner up on the fence to remind them that this is illegal.

At the last JRSO committee meeting it was decided that the children are now going to fine parents who park illegally or who park in a dangerous way. Jaheim, the chair of the JRSO, has devised a fine and members of the JRSO will be on duty outside the school gates to watch for these illegal activities.

Faitrade Products on Sale Again

The Fairtraders have organised that from January the Melcombe Shop will again be selling Fairtrade products. The very popular Geo Bars will be back, along with healthy snacks such as fruit mixes. We have also managed to find Fairtrade Apple, Orange ands Tropical juices.

The shop will be selling these at slightly above cost price.

Fruit Juices will be 60p each

The Fruit Snacks will be 40p each

The Enterprisers will be looking out to see what sells well.

Yr 6 Graduate from University

After a week of working with Intro University, the Year 6s graduated on Friday. The week course involved learning about the Second World War and going on a trip to the Churchill's War Rooms in Westminster. The children worked together on a presentation which they gave to their parents at Roehampton University. The only criticism was that they were unable to throw their graduation caps into the air at the wend of the ceremony.

Blocks Mental Maths

Congratulations to the children who have achieved a Block this year.

The number of children who were tested and the number of children who passed a Block have both increased considerably. This year we are issuing over 350 certificates and some children are receiving 5.

We are very pleased with the amount of work the children are doing at home with the help of their parents. Please keep it up!

Food Tasting with Eden

The parents and children were invited by Eden to taste some of the dishes they provided for the children at lunch time. The parents had a great time and agreed that the food was very tasty.

Henry Compton's Marvellous Music

The boys from Henry Compton came to Melcombe to show the children how they they can play instruments and make "marvellous music"! The whole school watched as the boys played old and new songs. Everyone agreed that the Henry Compton children are very talented.

The Fire Brigade visit the Nursery

The children in Nursery had a visit from the Fire Brigade who brought a fire engine into the playground. They took out their hoses and showed the children how they can squirt water on to a fire. The children were very impressed.

Fulham Football Study Club

The Year 6 class finished their weekly study club this week with a presentation and prize giving. The children split the time equally between Chelsea, Queens Park Rangers and Fulham football clubs with St Mary's and Latimar primary schools. The highlight of the occasion was the arival of the 3 club's mascots who posed for photographs with both the children and the parents.

MPS Girls' Football Team 2010

The girls' football team was very successful in this year's competition and reached the Quarter Finals, were they were knocked out in a penalty shoot-out. The school is very proud of their success and awarded them with a shield. Congratulations to them and Robbie Ward, their coach!

Virtual Bike Race

Melcombe has been selected as a Bike It School and are being supported by Sustrans who are the UK's leading sustainable transport charity and who encourage people to choose to travel in ways that benefit their health and the environment. Sustrans Bike It officers are running a nationwide Virtual Bike Race in March, with over 550 schools racing around the UK on Sustrans' National Cycle Network to win some great prizes!

Our school will be taking part and we will be encouraging as many children as possible to cycle to school during the competition week which begins on 1 March 2010. Our Bike It Officer, Owen, will be at the school on Thursday the 25 February to check the children's bicycles to ensure they are in good working order and that the children can safely ride them. He will attempt to fix minor problems but will send home a note for the more serious repairs.

Please support the children and our school by encouraging your child to cycle to school (if possible) and to cycle in a safe manner wearing safety gear. To read more about the race click on the link below:

Royal Visit

Dear Parents and Carers

The school is very proud to have been selected by Debt Doctors Foundation UK, a charity with whom we have frequently worked, for a visit by their patron, HRH Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

The visit will take place on Thursday the 25 February 2010 and HRH will be visiting KS2 classes to view the work we do in conjunction with Debt Doctors. There will also be an opportunity for the KS1 classes to see her before she leaves.

The Duchess is keen to see our school going about its normal routine but due to her high profile, there will be a large amount of security before, during and after her visit. The school has been been asked not to allow any visitors into the school who would not usually be present on that day and at that time.

The school will be taking photographs and these will be posted on our Community News Website.

Despite the mixed weather, we very much hope you all had a lovely break. The school re-opens on Monday 7^th September at 9 a.m. The Nursery children return on Monday 14^th September

New Office Arrangements

During the holiday break we have been carrying out a range of work across the school. This includes a reorganisation of the school office where late attendance and other office functions have now been separated to reduce crowding within the office area.

LATE ATTENDANCE: Children arriving at school after 9.05 a.m. must now report to the Late Attendance desk located to the left of the school office to obtain a ‘Late Card’.

THE MAIN OFFICE: will deal with the following areas

It is a financial requirement that you obtain and retain proof of any payments made to the office staff, who will issue you with a receipt. During busy periods this may take a few minutes and you are asked to be patient during these times

Refurbishment work

In addition to reorganising the school office, other work has been undertaken during the holidays:

Refurbishing the Key Stage 2 Boys toilet as part of an on-going modernisation plan. During the refurbishment we have taken the opportunity to remove all the urinals and replace them with individual toilet cubicles.

Replacement of the mats in all classrooms
The Ceiling in the Parents Room has been repaired following water damage.
The flooring in the Reception Class has been replaced.
New Storage areas have been created

The Directory is a comprehensive online search facility that contains contact details and information on local and national services and what they can offer. It is aimed at 0-19 year olds, their families and the local professionals. Information includes: advice and guidance, childcare and leisure activities, parenting and family support, health and well being, education and employment, careers, volunteering opportunities, youth clubs etc

Last year we changed the way we do "homework" at Melcombe to Personalised Learning - the Steps Reading Scheme, the Blocks Mental Maths Scheme and the Research Projects.

Stay and Play
Stay and Play Sessions are designed to provide a stimulating environment for parents/carers to play and learn with their child (aged 1-3 years). Each session includes free play, singing/dancing and a story time. A healthy snack and drink is provided for the children and tea and coffee for the adults.

Monday Afternoons 2.00-3.00 pm
ESOL courses.
These are designed for those adults who are new to English and would like to develop their skills. Crèche facilities are available.

Tuesday Mornings 9.15-11.15 am

Me, Myself, I.
This is a parents’ run sewing group who at present are working on a tapestry wall hanging. Come along and add your contribution whilst meeting the other parents/carers and chat about matters that are important to you.

Getting Ready Matters 9.15-11.15 am.
Getting Ready Matters Sessions are designed for those children whose third birthday falls between 1st May and 31st August 2009 to prepare them for starting in the Nursery. Each week an area of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum is explored with planned activities for the children and information sheets for the adults. A healthy snack and drink is provided for the children and tea and coffee for the adults.

Wednesday Afternoons 3.15-4.15 pm
ICT
The computer suite is available for those who would like to explore programs and learn with their child (support is at hand) or for those who simply wish to check their emails.

Thursday Mornings 9.15-11.15 am
Childminder Drop-in Sessions
These sessions are for locally registered Childminders to meet with their Childminder Networker coordinator who will organise support and training.

Thursday Afternoons 1.30-3.00 pm
Workshops
These are run on a weekly basis and include Healthy Eating and First Aid

Friday Mornings 9.15-11.15 am
Parent Friends Coffee Mornings
These are informal coffee mornings when parents and carers can meet and discuss a range of issues, which may concern them (housing, financial, domestic etc) with our Family Support worker.

Results from 2008 KS2 SATs

The school is justifyably proud of our KS2 2008 SATs results.

Although our results were very high, with 85% of children achieving level 4 or above in English, 88% of children achieving level 4 or above in Mathematics, and 90% of children achieving level 4 or above in Science, it is our value added of which we are most proud. This is the first year that Melcombe has come top of the league.

New Office Arrangements

During the holiday break we have been carrying out a range of work across the school. This includes a reorganisation of the school office where late attendance and other office functions have now been separated to reduce crowding within the office area.
